Choosing a Poker Table can be quite confusing.  There are poker felts and Nighthawk poker tablepoker table tops available that are quite inexpensive but they aren't the focus of this "How to" guide. The worst thing you could do is to buy a poker table only to find out about another type that would have been much better for you. So, I am going to try to describe the basic choices available so you can make an informed and hopefully the best decision for you.

The first type for consideration is a poker table with folding legs.  The folding leg feature is nice to be able to put the table aside when not in Folding leg poker tableuse (this can be the deciding factor as to wether it is "allowed" or not).  There are a wide variety of tables in this category but most have built-in cupholders and come in a variety of felt colors (green, blue, red or black).  There are round or octagon shaped tables that are 48" to 52" in diameter.  They can seat 8 adults.  The oval tables range from 73" long to 96" long - the most popular size and best value is 84" long.

The least expensive poker tables have folding legs & fold in half in the middle.  They are great for smaller storage spaces & cheaper to ship so Folding poker tabletheir overall cost is lower.  A 73" is normally only recommended if this is the only size of table that will fit in your room. It will seat 7-8 people.  These tables are about $150. delivered.  The 84" table will seat 8 - 9 adults.  While the 84" tables have 10 cup holders, if you have some guys above 250 lbs. 10 players will be uncomfortable.  You can get one of these tables delivered for around $200.

The cheaper tables have a no frame or a wood frame underneath the table (a metal frame is generally much sturdier).  In general, the more expensive tables have sturdier folding legs as well.  The padding under the felt and arm rests varies as does the quality of the felt and vinyl for the arm rests.  These differences are why it is important to buy from a reputable source.

The mid range poker tables generally have the higher quality components and have a wooden "raceway" around the inside of the arm rests.  These are nice to stack the chips on, it helps the felt to last longer and really just looks better.  These tables have some nice features built-in but are generally "as-is" (no customization).  Some of these tables have a dealer spot available with a chip tray.  These are nice for blackjack or poker games with a rake. These tables can come with heavy duty folding legs or fixed mounted bases.  The bases can be 2 half moon pedestals, metal pedestals, fixed mounted feet (some even have claw feet). One new design has a removeable center felt which can even have a custom printed surface (use your imagination here - your name, company name,Custom poker table felt poker room name, favorite team, college, group, animal, etc.). If you can find a mid-range table with the features you are looking for they can be excellent values.  These type of tables range from $250. to $1000. plus about $150 for shipping.

Higher end poker tables.  There are several premium poker tables that Rockwell poker tablehave been introduced over the past couple of years.  Some of these designs have a wood top that sits on top of the poker table and converts it to a fine dining room table.  If you find a table that has the features you are looking for they are great options vs. the time required to get a custom poker table.  Plus, you can easily buy a matching table in the future.  Here are some examples:

Night Hawk: 55" round high end tableRound poker table

Casino X: 96" heavy duty table with dealer spot & drop slot

Mahogany table: 96" mahogany table with pedestals and claw feet

Rockwell: 94" high end table with replaceable felt & upgrades

Premier: 96" high end dealer spot table

Elite: 96" table w/ cup holders mounted in over-sized arm rests

Now we have arrived at the custom poker table.  These can start around $800. for an 84" long table (plus about $150 S/H).  It is a couple hundred dollars more for a 96" long table.  You have a choice of playing surface (felt, saddle cloth, nylon or speed cloth), felt color, arm rest color and wood stain color.  Cupholders are usually black plastic as standard and cost a bit more for oversized cup holders, for brass or stainless steel.  For additional customization you are in the $1,200 to $2,500 range where you can get custom printed felt, lighted raceway, drop boxes, legs with claw feet, custom sizes, etc.

When ordering multiple tables the cost of shipping per table drops quite significantly.  So, if you (or some of your friends) can order more than one table at a time you will save quite a bit of money.  Just contact me for a quote to your zip code.  Most shippers charge extra to ship to a residential address - so shipping to a business address is generally recommended.

I hope this helps.  I am mainly interested in helping you to determine what table can meet your needs and stay within your price guidelines.  I am happy to answer any questions you might have.  All the best,  Jim
