This "How to" is designed to help you select the items best suited for a new Poker Room.  Wether is is in your home, a new charity tournament or for a start-up business Poker Room or Venue this info should be helpful.

The first thing to tackle is the table.  How much room do you have?  What size of table(s) will fit?  If you are going to have more than 8 players (particularly if some might be XL's) you should consider a 92" or 96" table.  Are you going to have a full time dealer?  If so, you should probably have a dealer spot (the arm rest is removed so it is easier to shuffle & deal the cards). Do you need a poker chip tray or drop box ?

Drop boxes are becoming a lot more popular (even for home poker games) for rakes, the house/charity "take", dealer tips, rebuys or for the money from new people buying into a cash game.  The felt color is more of a personal choice.  A poker room may want more than 1 felt color to help with instructions to participants such as "we are starting the tournament in a half hour on the blue tables" or "we will be opening a $5/$10 cash game on the far red table in 5 minutes". You might want to read our "How to" article on Poker Tables if you want more info.

The next item is the poker chips.  Are you only going to have tournaments or cash games or both?  I would recomend 2 different styles of chips if you are going to have both so they can't get mingled (home games may want to start out with 1 set).  Other than home games where you might know & trust everyone, I would recommend custom chips.  Otherwise you can have some guy go to K-Mart & buy a small $40. set to match your chips, bring in 10 green chips, pull them out of his pocket and have an extra $250. in $25. chips in front of him when he cashes out early.  Security is an important consideration.  It is worth the $100. or so to get custom chips !!  The denominations you use and the quantity of each necessary varies from situation to situation.  I am happy to help you here - either call or e-mail me and I'll help you.  For help selecting the style and quantity of chips you want you should see our "How to" guide for selecting poker chip sets.

Playing cards are often overlooked.  The dollar store cards won't hold up.  Some of the serious casino dealers insist on KEM cards.  My preference is for Copag cards.  I like the many choices from Copag, I think they last just as long and are about 30% less expensive.  There are other types of 100% plastic cards available some are good values - you might want to experiment but you can't go wrong with Copag.  You will want "poker" size cards - they are 1/4" wider than bridge sized cards.  I prefer the "jumbo" sized text (not the magnum).  Jumbo text on the cards is larger than standard and is easier to see from the end of the table particularly if the lighting is less than ideal.

A Texas Holdem tournament timer is important for poker tournaments.  100 chip acrylic poker chip holders are needed late in tournaments for the larger stacks to be relocated to another table.  Some rooms use them or plastic tubes for the tournement starting chip stack.  Dealer buttons and cut cards are other accessories to be sure you don't forget.  You can get more info on these various items in out "Poker Room Starter Wish List" under the poker product info tab.

Other items to complete the atmosphere are poker art, poker signs, framed poker memorabilia or poker prints.  Customized poker signs are a very nice addition to any poker room.  You should consider some poker shirts, card covers & poker glasses if you want to be a real poker player.  There are lots of items that can be used for prizes like a "donkey" card cover or the "MyHeaterzOn" poker pills for the first out or the "bubble" person as well as the gold poker champion bracelets.  As always, feel free to cantact us for help in any of these areas.  All the best,  Jim
