How to choose a Roulette Table

How to choose a Roulette Table

Picking the right roulette table  can be more involved than it looks. Whether you’re furnishing a home game room, outfitting a private club, or buying for a small casino, the right choice is important. Here’s a plain-spoken, practical guide to help you buy smart in today’s marketplace.

Start with the type: American (double zero) vs European (single-zero) format on the playing area.  All casinos in the US use the double zero format so this is what you should get if you are in the US.

There are companies that have a very good selection of tables in stock at quite reasonable prices (see the photos above).  This is a good place for people to start.  These standard tables start around $1000. (including shipping) and go up from there.  If you want to have a higher end game room, then the custom tables that are later in this article may be more for you.

Table size: there are some tables that are 84” x 42” which would be good for smaller spaces but the selection of these is very limited.  The most common size is 96” x 48” (or dimensions similar to this). This size of table has (7) cup holders but up to (10) people could play on this table.  A 96” table can have roulette wheels up to 22” or 25” in diameter.  If you want a larger wheel such as a casino size wheel which is 32” then you will probably need a larger table such as 108 x 55”.  This would likely need to be a custom built table.

The playing surface (commonly called the felt):  Green is the most common color and has been the usual color in casinos particularly in the past.  The second most popular color is a black background.  Other colors available are blue or burgundy but they are harder to find.  The felt color can be changed but this usually costs extra.  A popular upgrade is to have a custom felt designed, printed and installed on the table.  A custom felt installed will cost $400. or less.

Table legs or table base: Folding metal legs are the least expensive and are great if you want to store your table after use.  There are wooden legs that are easy to set up & take down.  They look much nicer and cost $100 to $150 extra.  Table height is a consideration.  Most poker tables & dining tables are 30” tall.  This is the most common height for roulette tables too but having a slightly taller table such as 37” high can be a better choice since many people play roulette while standing or may use short stools.

Other details: You definitely want jumbo cup holders (3.5 inch) since these will hold many bottles, cans & glasses that are larger than the 12 ounce size.  The lowest priced tables are made of cheap materials and are not repairable (they are just disposable tables).  You should check to be sure that you are getting a plywood main board (not MDF, particle board, flake board, etc.).  Also, you should get replaceable armrests & felt.  If your armrests get damaged this allows you to remove them & either replace the vinyl yourself or take it to an upholsterer.  The same with the felt – if you want a different color or want to upgrade to a custom felt – you can do this (if replacable).  Also, a felt can get stains or wore out – now you can replace it with a new one.

Accessories: You will need chips.  Usually there are a variety of colors of chips available in a roulette chip set.  Each person uses their own color of chips so that it is clear which winning chips belong to a particular person.  Then there is a roulette marker to put on the winning number.  You would want to have a marker that is clear, blue or a color different from your table felt and the numbers so it is easy to see.  A roulette rake is a clear acrylic device for collecting the chips.  They can be useful if you want to try one.  Some tables can come with lights.  There are many features and options available with custom tables.

Roulette wheels: There are 16” and 18” wheels available.  Most home tables have 20” that cost around $325. or 22” diameter wheels that cost around $595.  Mahogany is the most popular color for roulette wheels but black wheels are gaining popularity.  There are wheels that are various sizes from 25” up to 32” in diameter.  When you get into these larger sizes, the prices jump quite significantly.  A 32” new wheel sells for around $6000.  These larger wheels are also very heavy.  You need to be sure that your table can hold them and this may be something to consider if you would need to move the wheel around.  There are companies that refurbish casino wheels – a 32” refurbished wheel will cost around $4500. (shipping may be extra).

If you are looking for a higher end roulette table, then you would be looking into custom tables (see photos above).  These are available in any size, with any color of felt and many accessory options.  You would have a choice of a custom felt, upgraded bases – even footrests on some, curved wood around the wheel & chip area, a choice of wood color, decorative finals around the wheel area, lights, phone chargers, a wood chip rail, a drop box, real leather armrests, a table cover or even a wooden top for parties, etc.  These tables start around $2500 and can go up over $6 000. (plus shipping).
